Maybe this is a dumb question or one that’s been answered before, but i’ve searched around and haven’t found a clear answer (if one exists). I want to be a comedy writer. Obviously it would be awesome to create my own show, but honestly i’d be thrilled to just be a steady working writer on other people’s projects forever. I know from my own research that the comedy world can be a little different, where people might be pulled from improv places like ucb and second city to be writers, or from their standup act (though not sure exactly how often this happens in the sitcom world, since writing sitcoms is completely different from sketch). Still, it seems like the only options for people who want to purely write, and not perform, are applying to fellowships (extremely low odds), entering contests (low odds, costly), and reaching out to agents (low odds). However, i’ve gotten the impression on this sub, and i could be mistaken, that agents only want to represent you if they think you can sell something; meaning an original pilot. They don’t want to help you get a staff job.

Wga or no wga, a general rule of thumb states that the higher the page count, the higher the screenwriter’s salary. Similarly, if the script you’re being paid to write has to be completed within, say, six weeks, you’ll get more money than one with a six-month deadline. After all, the less time you have to finish the project, the harder you’re going to have to work in each writing session. Additionally, you must take stock of your own time: how much of it are you willing to sacrifice? and at what potential price?.
Once june rolls around, there’s no time for staffed writers to celebrate getting hired. It’s time to get to work in the s’ room. No two writers’ rooms are alike. They’re put together by showrunners and reflect their creative and managerial approaches. This means drastic variations in who’s hired (some rooms have mostly mid to high level writers, some are filled with baby staff writers), what it physically looks like (sometimes it’s an actual room with a whiteboard, sometimes it’s not) and what the creative dynamic is like (how stories are created and how things get done).
Avoid vague, imprecise, dreamy descriptions when you’re writing for reader’s digest or any magazine. For example, don’t write “someone quit her job to move somewhere else. †instead, be concrete and specific: “a writer in vancouver, canada quit her job tending sheep to move to new york city to pursue her dream of a freelance writing career. †answer these questions: what’s his name? what city does he live in? how old is he? what job did he quit? what dream is he pursuing? what made him quit his job? is he a short or a tall man? pretend you’re a curious reader.
Staff writer for music (how much do staff writers make?) as a staff writer you write lyrics, compose a melody, and create your song for a single music publishing company, getting paid through *exclusive* songwriting contract. Another way to think of music staff writing is "songwriting only" or "royalty only". You don't.
