there’s a common misconception floating in the ether that grants are free, easy money. That’s simply not the case. Grants are awarded through an increasingly competitive system that favors only the strongest proposals. Here are some tips for making sure your proposal is in tip-top shape. Do your research on the funder you’re approaching. Make sure the request you’re submitting is appropriate for the foundation, corporation, or other grant program you’re applying under. Read the guidelines carefully and thoroughly, and research past grants to make sure your request fits both in terms of the content of the proposal and the grant amount.
For example, don’t ask for a $50,000 grant from a family foundation that only gives grants between $5,000 and $15,000.
Writing grant proposals requires an entire suite of specialized skills. A grant writer needs to have a strong capacity for: research to identify viable grants and relevant data. Analysis to synthesize the elements of a successful application. Social outreach to cultivate relationships with prospective funders. Writing and organization to draft and arrange a compliant proposal.
September 7, 2017 by claudia sanchez leave a comment throughout my journey as a grant writer, reviewer, and mentor to aspiring grant writers, i have had multiple opportunities to read grant proposals that received funding—and many more that did not. One question i often get from novice grant writers is: “how do i get my proposal funded?†to address this question, it is helpful to examine strategies that successful grant writers have in common. Here, i highlight seven basic strategies that i consider “musts†when it comes to preparing grant proposals.
"used the sample grant as a guide to write a grant proposal. Just found out last week that we won the the grant to the tune of $1. 9 million dollars. I am so happy and excited.
The sample grant proposals are awesome! i highly recommend this course!" - sheila savage.
Always write from the heart. The most successful grant proposals are the ones that is inspiring and touching. You don’t want to use jargons and acronyms. Just tell the story in a simple manner. Create a grant proposal that can grab attention, and make people fall in love with the mission you’re carrying. To do this, you should write the proposal as if it is the last proposal of the day that’s going to be read by a tired program officer.
If you have a degree in a field like communication or english, and you have solid command of the written word and ability to research extensively, then you have the potential to craft successful grant proposals. And you should consider becoming a grant proposal writer. Be an excellent writer-: you need to be a good writer to be able to handle grant proposal writing. You must know how to communicate your client’s intentions clearly, within the proposal. Therefore, the first step to take is to improve your writing skills.
Like every contract you'll pursue as a freelancer, you'll be most successful by presenting yourself professionally and by backing up your claims of success. Show potential clients other grants you've written, or samples of your persuasive writing. Also share your success rate for winning grants. Before you bid for a job, also gather information from the client about the research, interviews and other background data you'll need to collect to write the grant, so you get a good estimate of how many hours you'll spend on the job. Then provide a written proposal that synthesizes all of that information into one document for the client to approve.
A successful grant proposal is not made in a single day. It requires a lot of hard work, research, information, experience, & precision. Most of the grant applications are denied due to improper proposals. The needs might be genuine, but the proposal may not be smart. The panel reviews many applications each day & they can easily identify the flaws. Each section in a proposal should have logical reasoning or a rationale. It should be very concise & to the point.

In the foundation and corporate arena, relationships are a key component to successful grant proposals. Once you have identified potential foundations, contact them to talk about your project before you begin writing your proposal. A foundation grant officer can be a great advocate for your project and an excellent resource for developing a strong proposal.
Community support is vital for a successful project. Many grant programs require a local funding match and/or community engagement in the project’s design and execution.
The stronger the local support for a project, the easier it will be to secure matching funds, letters of support, and in-kind donations. Once the proposal summary is developed, seek out academic, political, and professional individuals or organizations, as well as community members or groups, that may be interested in your proposal. Obtain their support in writing, and then involve these individuals and organizations in project input. One way to engage these community members is by holding meetings with the top decision makers in the community with similar concerns/interests. The type and quality of community support is important. Letters of endorsement detailing specific areas of project approval and commitment are often requested as part of a proposal. Engage with these individuals and organizations early on in the process, since letters of endorsement can take several months to develop and many agencies require affiliation agreements (a mutual agreement to share services between agencies) and building space commitments before the grant is approved and/or awarded.
Your focus should always be to ensure that all the relevant data is kept organized as a general nonprofit organization’s practice. The truth is, once you begin the grant writing process, all this will begin to pay off. You can easily retrieve digital tools in which data is recorded systematically. These platforms can be website analytics, online donation platforms, automated matching gifts, prospect data services or membership software among others.

A series of small awards will not definitively achieve your aims, as those grants will be limited by small sample sizes and budgets. But small grants will show that each of your aims is feasible — that you can “pull it off†(more about that in tip no. 5). This approach is critical as grant-review panels often see a large grant as the culmination of a growing body of work progressing from modest seed grants to larger and larger awards, in a cumulative fashion.
These grants of up to $2,500 are available to women and transgender artists and cultural producers based in greater philadelphia, whose work emphasizes social change. Strong grant writing abilities require multiple perspectives to ensure that your programming plans, language, and data are the most persuasive and well-reasoned that they can be. It’s almost never a good idea to write a grant application alone. Your nonprofit’s grant writing team should be involved in brainstorming the right programming and engagement strategies to propose. A reliable team will consist of:.
The current economy has impacted all aspects of business, and non-profit organizations are no different. In these times, there is significantly more competition for both donations and for grants that may be available. It is critical, then, that anyone involved in grant writing is able to present the organization’s mission, goals, and needs in the most professional manner possible.
* making a plan (and sticking to it) * talking and writing like an expert * knowing types of funding and formatting * aiming for timeliness and following up nearly two decades ago, i discovered the magic of grant writing. Never before had i been involved in an occupation where, every day, my job felt like that of a magician. Just imagine: taking a vision, researching it well, identifying a perfect funding match, and then writing an award-winning document. It just all seems too good to be true - write it and money will come. Early on in my grant writing days, i learned by reading and doing; i had no mentors, and resource books like this one weren't plentiful. The common sense i commandeered 20 years ago to figure it out is the common sense i use today.
Get noticed among the giant stack of proposals with a powerful story about your organization’s impact. Storytelling adds an important humanizing connection to your proposal that can persuade potential funders of the importance of your work. You can create stories by focusing on those benefitting from your organization’s services as well as by concentrating on those involved with the support of your organization—from staff to donors, to volunteers. A great way to generate storytelling content is by interviewing a variety of people that have benefited from your nonprofit’s work. These interviews can be useful not just for your grant writing, but can also be repurposed for your annual reports, marketing materials, and your nonprofit’s blog.

You probably remember the mnemonic in the title of this chapter from grade-school english class on how to write a news article. In teaching budget preparation, i have long stressed that a budget must be able to stand on its own and answer questions about your grant proposal (not raise questions). It occurred to me that, in this way, a grant budget is like a good news article, and by using the familiar formula the grant writer will remember to include all of the important components in the budget. These words are also a good way to group expenses and income for a clear presentation. Of course “why†is missing from the list of points to cover. I’ve not discovered how to explain that in numbers—yet.
