Look to the instrument cluster. If you see a warning light that looks like a battery or reads "gen" or "alt," that's a clear signal. The light may remain on, or only come on when multiple electrical accessories are being used. Even if the warning light isn't on, dim lights are an indicator of alternator problems, as is the instruments and gauges suddenly not working. You may experience the smell of burning rubber if a belt is frying, or you may hear a screeching, whining, or growling sound from under the hood. These are all classic signs of alternator that is in danger of dying.

The alternator by itself can be the cause of dimming lights, fading radio, and/or stalling. If the alternator is going bad, you will notice that dashboard lights appear dimmer than usual. Additionally, you might notice that other lights, like the interior cabin light or even the headlights just are not as bright as they should be, perhaps even yellowish. You might notice the lights going dim when some other part of the car kicks in, like the engine cooling fan – and when it stops, the lights return to a somewhat brighter state. This could also be a symptom of other problems within the electrical system that should be checked.

7: A Dead Battery

If your vehicle won’t start, it’s usually caused by a dying or dead battery, loose or corroded connection cables, a bad alternator or an issue with the starter. It can be hard to determine if you’re dealing with a battery or an alternator problem. Here’s how to know which one is the culprit.

One of the first symptoms of a bad or failing alternator is the need to jump start the vehicle on a regular basis. It is the job of the battery to provide the power to crank the engine and start the vehicle, however, it is the job of the alternator to make sure that the battery stays charged. If the alternator is beginning to have problems or has failed, it will not be able to meet the vehicle’s electrical needs, including keeping the battery fully charged. A low or uncharged battery will not be able to keep up with the load required to start an engine multiple times, and will result in a dead battery. Continuously having to jump start the vehicle may be a sign that the alternator may not be charging the battery and is therefore unable to successfully start a vehicle.

I bought & installed an auto zone alternator bad right out of box. Drove out west and replaced it on the trip after dead battery. Came home and i went to auto zone and wanted my money back since it was bad and i had already bought one from napa. After much discussion they folded and gave me a gift card.

I realize i have not posted the finished pics yet. So here they are. Engine bay • got the new batteries and terminals installed, as well as the wiring for the 'big three' nd for the winches. How to Test Your Alternator's Voltage Regulator

Well i'm pretty pissed off mike is leaving me hanging on my alternator. Not what i would expect from someone who's talked so well about around here.
