Quilts with patterns named "wagon wheel," "tumbling blocks," and "bear's paw" appear to have contained secret messages that helped direct slaves to freedom, the pair claim. Jacqueline tobin and raymond dobard first posited the quilt code theory six years ago in their book hidden in plain view: a secret story of quilts and the underground railroad , published in 1998. In the book, the authors chronicled the oral testimony of ozella mcdaniel, a descendant of slaves. Mcdaniel claims that her ancestors passed down the secret of the quilt code from one generation to the next.

Do you ever spray baste anything that big? i think a big con of pin basting is losing your free motion quilting rhythm to take out the pins. I also take out pins too close to the foot/needle, so i’m twisting the pins a bit to get them out, and probably increasing the size of the holes they make in my quilt.

Ok, so this may be a really dumb question, but i haven't been quilting long and have not come across this situation yet, so please forgive! when the batting instructions say "quilt up to 8 inches apart" (warm & natural, in this case) what does that mean exactly? does it mean you could, in theory, do straight line quilting across the quilt with rows 8 inches apart (horizontal or vertical) or does it mean you would need to quilt both across the quilt every 8 inches (horizontal and vertical) every 8 inches?.

Under the Quilt of Night

On sunday night, about a week before christmas eve, i decided that i should make my sweet neighbor girl a quilt for her 18th birthday. It was a crazy idea, no doubt, but i forged ahead anyway. I'm not sure that i would recommend making a quilt in such a hurry the week before christmas ever again, but i'm glad that i managed to pull it off. A deadline is a good thing! i gifted it to her on her birthday, which is on christmas eve. She was very surprised and loved it, which made it all worth it. Loft - the weight and thickness of batting is measured by its loft. Low loft means thin, high loft means thick.
