Brad if you logged into your google postmaster tools dashboard late yesterday or today, you may have been greeted with a troubling sight in the ip reputation graph: from what we can tell, it appears to be an issue on google’s end. I’ve checked dozens of ip reputations and all show nothing but red for december 10th data, and many in industry forums have reported the same.

I love details, and i love numbers. Makes sense, right? i’m a developer. Details matter because they define our work. But much as i love details, i also love simplicity. There’s an elegance to simplicity that, if done right, can make for better and more powerful solutions to complicated problems. One great example of this is google postmaster tools’ reputation system. It’s surprisingly basic, and yet it works wonders in email deliverability.

Recently google announced a new tool to monitor your email delivery for messages sent to gmail and google apps. It’s called google postmaster tools. With this tool, you can see detailed information about the messages that gmail receives from your domain. This could include emails from your regular mailboxes, marketing emails, transactional (such as those sent from postmark) and more. For instance, you can see domain and ip reputation, spam rates, encryption usage, and email authentication success/failure rates.

As gmail is one of the bigger delivery challenges for a lot of senders, having access to the postmaster tools helps tease out issues. I had some issues earlier this week getting access to tools and so brought up a conversation on one of the delivery lists. The nice folks there helped me get it solved.

What are Postmaster Tools?

Update: as of this morning (9/12) ip reputation data appears to be displaying correctly and domain reputation data is being provided. If you’ve checked google postmaster tools lately, don’t freak out just yet about your ip reputation. As first reported by word to the wise ,  the ip reputation metrics appear to be broken at the moment, displaying a “bad” reputation for all ip addresses since 9/9. I’ve seen this in my own postmaster tools account, along with a lack of data for domain reputation since 9/8. Authentication and encryption metrics appear to be working correctly for me, but i can’t say for sure whether the spam rate, feedback loop, or delivery errors charts are correct – they all show zero since 9/8, but that’s not uncommon in my experience.

September 11, 2017 by laura in industry there are widespread reports this morning (9/11/17) that google postmaster tools is showing bad ip reputation for ips starting on 9/9. This issue is affecting just about everyone. Looking through my client’s postmaster pages, i’m seeing red for ip reputation on every client. Even my clients with generally good reputation are seeing bad reputation since 9/9.

Google has launched a new set of tools for senders at their postmaster tools site. Anyone can register for google postmaster tools. All you need is the domain authenticated by dkim (the d= value) or by spf (the return path value). Google is only sharing data with trusted domains and only if a minimum volume is sent from those domains. A domain with some history (no brand new domains) and a reasonable track record (some or all of the mail is good).
