You’ve seen this before, its a form of black conservatism in which members of a marginalized group are burdened with the responsibility to change their lives, their situation. This philosophy, however ignores centuries of societal and social degradation.

Today, black people still feel the pressure to conform to the politics of respectability. This pressure is from within and outside the black community. When black influencers admonish other black folks to dress and speak a certain way because some speech patterns and clothing styles of our cultures are deemed unacceptable based on majority culture norms, they are promoting respectability politics. This often gives people in the majority culture license to critique the black community in a condescending, hurtful, and wholly inappropriate way. It also marginalizes those who don’t conform.

my research is about low-income black single mothers and how the intersection of race and gender shapes their motherhood identities and mothering activities. So, while my research is not on the topic of black women’s sexuality, one of the things that i look at is controlling images, specifically, the welfare queen and the baby mama.
I’m interested in how those controlling images come up for low-income black single mothers, and how they shape their perceptions of themselves as mothers and how they carry out their mothering activities.

There are many ways to understand how black women employed the politics of respectability. In maya angelou’s autobiographies, there are few cover-ups because she wanted readers to know her struggles. She wasn’t interested in a gospel choir singing “we shall overcome†and pretending that her work as a prostitute and running a brothel were shameful skeletons to be kept in the closet. I’ve been using “we†throughout this article because internalized racism — and its close friend, respectability politics — is something that many black people in white dominant cultures live with. Beyoncé is at the pinnacle of her career. At the coachella festival in the southern california desert on saturday, she showed that there’s nothing this mother of three can’t do. But she didn’t just kill the performance; she also rewrote the book on black respectability politics. She could have decided to play to the majority-white audience with a show that made it easier to forget cultural differences. Or she could be herself. Beyoncé chose the latter.
This presentation is related to the conference’s theme, “breaking the cycle of a people divided,†in the following ways. First, this presentation will examine how respectability politics can encourage members of the black community to police each other’s behaviors through society’s notion of professionalism, resulting in division and a sometimes desired severance from our roots. Next, it will examine respectability politics as it relates to social activism, and how differing desired approaches to achieve equality can result in a divided community. Lastly, this presentation will examine respectability politics’ role in elitism and exclusion in social structures in our community, and how it perpetuates division among the members of the black community. In an effort to break the cycle of a people divided, this presentation will utilize the aforementioned topics to highlight and pinpoint the issues surrounding respectability politics and propose ways members of our community can re-examine respectability politics and potentially rewrite the rules.

The politics of respectability is a tactic of public relations that is, per se, neither necessarily good nor necessarily bad.
I used to engage in respectability politics. I was taught that, if i proved i was of “good character,†i would be accepted by white society. I learned that it was my job to convince overtly and covertly racist white people that i was okay. I needed to make myself less threatening to shift their conscious and unconscious racist views and thereby make my life better. I was supposed to change someone else’s preconceived notions about myself based on their delusions of white supremacist superiority.
A couple weeks ago, i mentioned randall kennedy’s harper’s cover story in defense of respectability politics, which included the amazing fact that early 20thcentury racists foreshadowed “manspreading. †kennedy’s essay has, perhaps unsurprisingly, inspired a decent amount of backlash. I don’t presume to respond to kennedy’s full argument, though in many places he and his presumed interlocutors are talking past each other.
