Though entrepreneurship is the overall process of developing, launching and running a business, there are many different types of entrepreneurship. People have varying aspirations and visions for the kind of businesses they want to create. Everyone operates their business based on their own personality, skills and characteristics. Entrepreneurial personality types are driven by the need for momentum and for progress but we are highly reactive to constraint. We are the small sub-population of humanity that drives our evolution, but we can go from looking talented to disordered in a moment. When we don't understand this reactivity to constraint it can confuse us, cause us to judge ourselves, and hold us in place. When we understand ourselves better, we know we are not motivated by the rest of the world, and we can move forward and accomplish. When we release the judgment the rest of the world imposes on us and realize that we are driven by the need for momentum and contribution, we create the outcomes that we want in the world. Great entrepreneurs throughout history have proven, regardless of the diagnosis or disorder or even physical limitation, we can change the world.

This is part of the journey – after all jobs, hewlett packard, virgin, gates and roddick passed through it. It is here that the winnowing begins, for thousands are called but few make it past that stage. I personally have done three lots of spare room operations, two failed financially at an early stage and the last ran for 10 years before being wound up as the market moved away. Persistence in the face of adversity, single-minded focus as well as vision seems to be a charateristic of those that actually graduate from their bedrooms and garages. Otoh these are characteristics os successful people generally so no surprise there.

The scholarly literature often distinguishes between so-called opportunity and necessity entrepreneurship and between “pull†and “push†motivations. Despite the pervasive use of this terminology, empirical analyses are mostly based on a single country. The present paper contributes by investigating business owner survey data for the united states and 32 countries in europe and asia. We analyze the differences between business owners motivated by opportunity and necessity in terms of their (1) socioeconomic characteristics, (2) personality, and (3) perceptions of entrepreneurial support. Descriptive statistics reveal that the two groups of business owners have very different profiles along these three dimensions. Moreover, multinomial logit regressions indicate that the determinants of business ownership (versus paid employment) differ for opportunity and necessity business ownership. A specific result of the present study (covering all 33 countries) is that the probability of being an opportunity versus a necessity business owner is higher for male, younger, wealthier, proactive, and optimistic business owners. Furthermore, those who prefer being a business owner and those who have more favorable perceptions of financial start-up support are more likely to be an opportunity versus a necessity business owner.
