Advertisements and commercials are a great example of creative writing, so they can be used as writing activities for esl students. Give your learners some sample ads as well as typical expressions that are used in advertising, and then ask the learners to create their own ads. You can bring some familiar objects to the classroom and tell the learners to advertise them. The students can work solo, in pairs, or in groups.
For even greater creativity, encourage them to support their ads with images. For example, they can cut out those images out of newspapers or magazines, or print them from the web. Bonus points go to teachers who have their students present them as pitches for an extra speaking activity.

One of the difficulties is time constraints. Students may have other demanding tasks such as work responsibilities, sports, studying for exams, or family obligations. Writing step by step directions is an excellent first assignment in expository writing. Let these lesson plans for writing directions spark your own creative writing activities. The following ideas focus on the writing process itself, as well as the use of a specific writing mode. Kids will practice writing directions in a detailed, sequential format.
They'll work with sequential words and phrases to facilitate transitions from one action to the next. Transitional words and phrases are the golden keys to writing directions. They connect the ideas of a paragraph from sentence to sentence or the flow of a story from one scene to the next. Without proper transitions, a page of directions deteriorates into a befuddled mess.

Teaching creative writing means putting ideas first. It means resisting the urge to correct the writing and focusing instead on the development of the writer. And though it may seem counter-intuitive, doing so often requires questioning, ignoring, or even breaking the rules. “we may be too literal when we think about what it means to be a good writer,†writes educator and speaker jordan shapiro for forbes. “it is not all about letters and words. †especially when it comes to teaching children, he says, we get caught up in structure, grammar, and syntax. But these things are what make writing polished and proper, not meaningful and engaging. And unless you want to turn kids off of writing for the rest of their lives, it’s best to focus on the latter, and to make it fun.
