Ask the children to think of a story that they know well, and to write another version from another point of view.

First person narration can be very powerful when done right. Because you must embody the voice of the person narrating the story, you will often have to write in a more casual, informal voice. Pick a fiction book from your shelf. Go to page eight and find the eighth sentence on the page. Start with that sentence and write an eight-line poem that connects in some way to your work-in-progress. For instance, write from the pov of a character, or set the poem in a story setting. Over the last ten years, i’ve worked with thousands of writers, and in that time, i’ve there is one thing that stops more people from writing than anything else. “this is so bad,†we think after one particularly difficult sentence. “why would anyone read this? why would i want to read this? i thought i was better than this. I thought i was talented. So why am i producing such crap?â€.
If you want to get a young person’s attention, speak their language!  if it has anything to do with cell phones (pictures, text messages, or social media) you are probably on the right track. I like to have students locate examples of figurative language in pre-written text-message conversations. After they have that mastered, you might also have students write their own messages that weave figures of speech into the text.

When introducing a writing assignment, i would often provide exemplars, or mentor texts, and ask students to assess these using the rubric that would assess their own work. Not only did students better understand the rubric, they better understood the expectations for the writing. This inspired me to have students assess their own work in a similar manner. I ask students to assess their own work from my perspective. This can be via rubric or by simply providing feedback that they believe i would give. Once students get to know me, this feedback can be eerily correct! this helps students to see their work from a new perspective, and often will encourage students to make revisions before they submit their final work!.
