Whether through a thoughtful selection process or luck of the draw, you find yourself the newly anointed chair of the board. Now what? let’s be honest. Our sector needs to do a much better job of equipping these vital volunteer leaders to be successful. As you’d expect, it’s common for incoming board chairs to have zero preparation for this important role. In a 2016 study by the alliance of nonprofit management, over half the respondents reported they did nothing special to prepare for their role as chair of a nonprofit’s board. That’s a shame because an effective board chair can make a big difference in a nonprofit’s overall effectiveness. To better understand a change control board, it helps to know a bit more about who makes one up. Let's take a look at the different positions on the board. The chair calls the board to order, runs the change control board meetings, and has final approval on the changes. The board members can be from various projects or groups in the company and decide if the change is approved or rejected. The evaluator has the responsibility of evaluating how the change will affect the scope, schedule, and cost of the project. The originator is the person who is requesting a change to be approved and presents the information to the board. The modifier is responsible for making changes to the project. The project manager is responsible for the successful completion of the project. And the verifier ensures that approved changes were made.
I think the role of chairing is much more important to effective governance than the work of managing board meetings alone requires. A co-chairing arrangement offers: an added focus on governance practices a second perspective on managing the board an opportunity for some diversity in a key leadership role a more manageable work load for the two people in the role.
