A sonographer is a healthcare professional who specialises in the use of ultrasonic imaging devices to produce diagnostic images, scans, videos or three-dimensional volumes of anatomy and diagnostic data, frequently a radiographer , but may be any healthcare professional with the appropriate training. The requirements for clinical practice vary greatly by country. Sonography requires specialised education and skills to acquire, view, analyze, and optimize information in the image. Due to the high levels of decisional latitude and diagnostic input, sonographers have a high degree of responsibility in the diagnostic process. Many countries require medical sonographers to have professional certification. Sonographers have core knowledge in ultrasound physics, cross-sectional anatomy, physiology, and pathology.

Gel is applied to your skin over the area being examined. It helps prevent air pockets, which can block the sound waves that create the images. This water-based gel is easy to remove from skin and, if needed, clothing. A trained technician (sonographer) presses a small, hand-held device (transducer) against the area being studied and moves it as needed to capture the images. The transducer sends sound waves into your body, collects the ones that bounce back and sends them to a computer, which creates the images.

At the turn of the 21st century, the adoption of ultrasound was exploding. With the release of the first truly portable ultrasound systems, ultrasound, which had once been limited to radiologists, was now being used by a vast number of medical specialties from emergency medicine to anesthesiology. The demand for ultrasound training was high, but little was available. Sonographer brian keegan recognized the need for a reliable training tool and set off to develop the first ultrasound training model. After countless hours creating and testing different configurations in his garage, he had finally hit the mark. The formula matched the acoustic properties of human tissue and worked perfectly with any ultrasound system.
During clinical hands-on training, the sonographer trainee learns to engage the sonography patient, asking questions to determine medical history or explaining how a specific sonography procedure will proceed. They also learn how to position the patient properly. If necessary, they immobilize the patient through tools such as supportive braces. Working under an upper-level sonographer, a sonographer trainee also learns to operate sonography equipment. Although equipment varies depending on the trainee's focus, basic equipment the trainee learns to use include video equipment and high frequency transducers. The trainee also learns how to do basic troubleshooting of the equipment, although he is not responsible for major maintenance.
