if you own a nice camera you can start working as an operator on indie short films pretty much immediately. Indie camera operators often have their own gear, although you can also rent gear as long as you take the time to learn to use it before getting on set with it. You can rent gear or take classes from filmmaker resource groups- i dunno about utah, but in my city, for instance, you could get gear and take weekend classes from places like this or this.

A videographer is usually a solo camera operator or a small crew that records videos for various industries. A videographer and cinematographer can sometimes get mixed up as they do similar jobs, but a cinematographer is generally someone who works on larger sets with bigger teams. Mary pickford with camera, c. 1916. Courtesy of wikimedia commons. During the silent era there does not appear to have been much serious thought given to the question of why there might or might not be women working as motion picture camera operators. The handful who did do this work kept a very low profile, and, as a consequence, many in the commercial industry may have thought that there was just no such thing as a female camera operator at all. Even one of the most well-connected women in the industry couldn’t think of one. Powerful executive producer and screenwriter june mathis , when asked in 1925 to reflect on women’s contributions said she could think of cases in which a woman worked as a cutter or a title writer but had yet to find a woman “turning a camera crank†(664). There were, however, a handful of women who despite the skepticism and even hostility they must have encountered on the set, did operate the heavy 35mm motion picture camera and mastered the new technology despite cultural expectations.
There are several courses that are run that will teach you how to use a camera, however, just because you have been on one of these courses this doesn't automatically lead you on to getting work as a cameraman. That said it will put you ahead of the crowd when it comes to job offers and, in addition, when you do finally get a job, you'll be one step ahead of everyone else when it comes to lighting, composition and camera technique. Another big plus of going on courses is that with a bit of luck your contemporaries at college will become successful writers, producers, directors etc and you can hit them up for work. camera work is one of the most artistic things that we do as technical artists. It is a perfect marriage of tech and artistry, which is why i think it's one of my favorite things to teach volunteers. Video cameras are really not all that complicated to learn, however, like playing chess, there is a difference between knowing how the pieces move and being a real chess player.
