There is no substitution for putting on a bee suit and getting up close to a hive to see if you have the inclination to be a beekeeper. This will give you an idea of what it takes, how your location works out, and whether you like it or not. It’s not recommended to have only one, as it’s helpful to have two or more for comparison and for equalizing winter stores and population for successful over-wintering.

Check with your family and anyone else (including pets!) living in the same household as you to ensure no one or yourself has a severe allergic reaction to bee stings. It doesn’t happen as often as you would think, but beekeepers occasionally do get stung — it comes with the sport! although this isn’t required, it is recommended you confirm with neighbors that they too carry no serious reactions to bee stings. If not, at least give them a heads up as to what you plan on doing and where. Most importantly, check with your state and local laws! some states require you to register the location of your beehive(s) and will provide you with specific guidelines you must follow to avoid getting stung by the law.

When selecting the perfect location for your beehive, there are many things to consider. As they say, location location location and your bees will thank you for taking the time to find the prime location for their new home—paid in honey, of course. It’s in your best interest to be the best realtor you can be for your swarm.

Honey bees are social insects with a structured society. The queen bee is the single most important bee in the hive, but she can’t do all the work alone! there are three basic roles in the bee community: the worker, the drone, and the queen. Worker bees are females and are responsible for a variety of activities, such as tending the queen and her eggs, building comb, guarding the hive’s entrance, and collecting food.

Two main systems are used in beekeeping. One is called the langstroth hive, and it's composed of boxes that are stacked on top of each other, each containing frames where the bees build their comb and store honey. You pull the boxes out like drawers to access the bees, harvest honey, and perform maintenance tasks. You can add boxes vertically if your hive needs more space.

To keep bees, you need a beehive. In the wild, bees build their own hive, usually in a hollow tree trunk or another sheltered place, but it can be anywhere. As a backyard beekeeper, you will provide a man-made hive for your bees so you can help maintain the colony and easily harvest the honey.

4) Purchase Protective clothing for working with the hive.

If you go the conventional route and purchase a package of bees, your next step will be to install them when they arrive in the mail. Give the bees a few hours of rest time before you place them in the hive so that they can acclimate to the new environment. Use this time to get the equipment together and dress in a veil and protective clothing.

5) Learn all you can about getting started in beekeeping

The best advice for how to get started with beekeeping is to do your research. You can learn from books, online information and classes, or an experienced beekeeping mentor in your area. Before you keep bees yourself, it’s important to understand how bees live and work. You’ll also learn the common problems beekeepers run into—such as varroa mites and harsh winters—and how to avoid them. This is also a good opportunity to get involved in the beekeeping community. There are a lot of different methods and opinions, and getting to know what your fellow beekeepers think can prove invaluable throughout your beekeeping journey.

the most frequently asked questions i get about beekeeping revolve around the beekeeping calendar. Springtime is when you will spend the most time with setting up and cleaning equipment. It’s the time of year for installing your bees, mixing up sugar and water to fill feeders, and opening and inspecting your hives several times a month.

Entrance reducer boardman feeders are great for package installs because you can replace the feed without disturbing the bees while they are getting settled. However a regular entrance reducer will not fit when the feeder is in place, so you will need to make a smaller one or use a piece of wood to reduce the entrance to the hive to protect it from robbing.

Install the package late in the afternoon. This helps prevent drifting. We recommend misting a little syrup on the screen of the cage 15 minutes before you are ready to move them to the hive for installation. This quiets them down and they will be better natured. There are several ways of installing a package of bees. We recommend the following two methods.
