What types of rocks are appropriate for iwagumi?
the rocks we would suggest for an iwagumi aquascape are seiryu stone , ryuoh stone (our favorite), ohko dragon stone, elephant skin stone , lava rock, and other inert, aquarium appropriate rocks. All rocks will vary in size, texture, characteristic, and coloration by nature even if they are the same type of stone. This is due to varying weather conditions and other natural elements that are contingent upon the region where the stone is found. Because aquascaping rocks of the same overall type can be found in many different regions, we recommend purchasing your choice of stone from a single source to ensure overall visual uniformity. To give a quick example, ryuoh stone found in one part of china may have slightly different characteristics when compared to another region of china even though they are essentially the same stone.
A key component to iwagumi layouts is making sure the aquascape rocks being used possess the same attributes to ensure the overall result flows naturally and is visually pleasing. This includes, but is not limited to, textures and coloration.

Crafting an aquascape with depth can be tricky in an aquarium due to the width of most aquariums. Cubes and ‘deep-dimension’ aquariums make this easier because you have the width to create valleys to lead the eye, but what about the rest of us? the goal here is to trick the eye by using some clever rock placements to create the impression of depth.
Aquascaping is the craft of arranging aquatic plants , as well as rocks, stones, cavework, or driftwood , in an aesthetically pleasing manner within an aquarium —in effect, gardening under water. It's a fact of life that algae will grow in an aquarium eventually. An algae pad or scraper is an important maintenance item. Another option is the algae magnet. This allows you to clean the algae off the inside of the glass by using a magnet on the outside, so you don't have to put your hand into the aquarium. You'll pay a little more, but the convenience is worth it.
Due to the heavy planting present in this style, algae will bloom in the beginning stages won’t likely occur. You also likely remarked that driftwood and rocks are not used in this aquascape style. Another great thing to add to the dutch style planted aquarium is fish. Having a bank of fish will bring the whole aquascape together as well as creating a better sense of completeness. Most tetra species would make great candidates when deciding what school of fish you want to use.
Research your fish species to find out which type of food they prefer and provide them with a varied diet. If you go for common beginner species, a high-quality flake food will normally serve as a good base. You can then start to experiment a little by culturing your own fruit flies or similar at home. Anyone who has lifted up a brown banana from a fruit basket knows how to cultivate fruit flies. If you keep bottom dwelling species, flake food is not a good idea since most of it will be consumed by other fish before it reaches the bottom. Get sinking pellets or similar to accommodate for the needs of your bottom dwellers. It is also important never to assume that algae-eaters will obtain sufficient amounts of food by grazing the algae in your aquarium – provide them with vegetable based foods as well.
Fish may seem like the perfect pet or hobby but fish aquariums are high maintenance due to several reasons; one of them being algae growth. To begin with, you must… comments off on.

To avoid this, imagine your tank as consisting of several images, or screens, layered one after the other from the front to the back of the tank, each with a small gap in between, so that each image is slightly further away from the first. Make sure that when you place your hardscape, you place it in a variety of ‘screens’, so that it spans a variety of points in the depth of your tank. Some pieces of hardscape can share the same ‘screen’, or point of depth, but the key is to create points of perspective from the the front, and these points should be the lowest, to the back where they will be the highest. Like the golden ratio, this is a guide, and only a guide, to creating a good sense of perspective within the aquarium. The more experienced artistic eye will learn to manipulate the rules and use and break them where desired to create a truly beautiful, individual scape.

James starr-marshall looks at some of the key creative and technical aspects of effective nano and pico aquascaping. As science advances and technology develops, the products we use every day are inevitably miniaturised — and aquariums are no exception. We can keep ever smaller aquariums, with tanks less than 20 l/4. 4 gal being aquascaped to a high standard and kept long-term stable and healthy. There are limitations concerning plant and fish/shrimp species but, as long as rules on stocking fauna are sensibly followed, a tiny aquascape can offer interesting possibilities.
