The term railroaded refers to the way the fabric pattern is woven at the upholstery fabric mill. As demonstrated by the image shown below, observe the way the stripes run on the roll. The same layout option will apply to any directional pattern. Looking at the image below, the regular or left sofa has the fabric pattern running up the roll which is the normal way upholstery fabric is milled. The pattern or in the case of a velvet, the grain, would run up/down the roll of fabric. The sofa on the right has fabric that is milled "railroaded", meaning that the fabric is woven so that the pattern or grain is situated so that the top would be from one side of the fabric to the other side as showin in the picture.

What Is Upholstery, Anyway?

Traditionally, reupholstering a vehicle's seats has been completed by experienced craftsman who must have the vehicle on site for disassembly, patterning, and reinstallation. The upholstery on most automotive applications is attached to the frame and foam of the seat by means of plastic clips, hog-rings, and velcro. Once these attachments are released, the factory upholstery will come off the seat frame and foam and is then able to be patterned and reproduced. However, this reupholstery process can be time consuming for the upholsterer and therefore expensive for the customer. It also requires at least a few days of downtime for the vehicle. This is where leatherseats. Com comes in. Leatherseats. Com specializes in pre-sewn, ready-to-be-installed, automotive leather interior kits, which can typically be installed in a single day. We pattern the interiors of late model vehicles as they are released so that we can produce custom interiors on demand for our customer base. For example,  the 2014 chevrolet silverado received a brand new interior from gm. We then arranged to receive a 2014 chevrolet silverado so that we could disassemble and pattern all the cloth pieces in the vehicle. Once the pieces are patterned, we then digitize these patterned pieces into our computer system as well as detailed sew order instructions so that they can be reproduced over and over again. upholstery For more information on this process, take a look at our production process page. Our pattern archive goes back mainly to the mid 90s and have many of the vehicle patterns from that date forward. We do have some patterns that are older than the mid 90s, but these are typically archive patterns which you should contact us directly on for more details and pattern verification.

The material doesn't breath as well as leather, which means it can stick to your skin during those hot summer months (leatherette also tends to feel hotter when the temperature rises). It's also not as durable as leather, often lasting ten years or less. The top layer of leatherette upholstery tends to crack as it wears, resulting in a more worn appearance and revealing the cloth layer underneath.

Remove day-to-day dirt with a mild soap and warm water solution, and gently wipe the surface dry. Please follow the use instructions below to maximize the life of your upholstery. Avoid saturating or soaking the fabric with cleaner/disinfectant. Rinse with clean water after exposure to eliminate residue and gently dry with a soft cloth. Following these guidelines will extend the life of the fabric, threads, seams, and cushioning that may potentially be impacted by disinfectant residue. Please use all cleaning and disinfecting agents as instructed. The use of other cleaning agents, disinfectants, conditioners, or protectants such as armor all®, acetones, or citrus based solvents can degrade fabric performance and may void earthlite’s warranty. For intensive healthcare applications, we recommend considering our pvc or ultraleather™ upholstery options for greater fabric life expectancy. furniture

A few tips for doing this on the cheap! an electric staple gun can be had for ~$30 at the low end, its true that you’ll have to do a bit more work but, i’ve done several old chairs and a couch with a $30 one and, it will get the job done in less time than you think. As the author said, even a manual will probably do but, your hands will definitely be sore at the end of the day. For either, you’ll want to have a good pair of needlenose pliers on hand (i’d also recommend a putty knife for those exceptionally stubborn staples). seat

Who Does Furniture Upholstery?

What is dacron? dacron, in the upholstery trade, is also known as terylene, kodel, poly wrap or polyester, cushion wrap, holfil, fiberfill and some others. While there are some differences between these products, they are all used for similar purpose in upholstery padding. They are used to give non-compressing wrap/finish to cut foam shapes or any uneven areas. Dacron is not prone to crushing and is manipulated to fill in imperfections in a cushion once the fill is inserted. This product is also very sanitary. Unlike some of the old horsehair products that are occasionally found in antique furniture, there is noting in it to support molds, mildews or any kind of parasitic life. Dacron will retain their given shape better over time than down fill or some lower density foams.

I’ve wanted to do an auto upholstery essential tools list for the diy group or upholsterers that are just starting out and just testing the waters. While doing my research on what’s already out there on this topic i noticed a lot of articles about upholstery tool must haves, including things like webbing stretchers and ripping chisels. Although these are essential upholstery tools for furniture, they are not much help at all when working with auto upholstery. The top ten for furniture will look somewhat different from the top ten for automotive interiors. The last thing you want to do is go out and buy a whole bunch of upholstery tools you will never need.

What are double rubs? if you are shopping for upholstery fabric the words ‘double rub’ will keep popping up. Simply put, this is a method for testing the ability of a fabric to withstand wear from abrasion. The test which uses double rubs is called the wyzenbeek test or method. This is a mechanized method that involves rubbing a piece of cotton duck on the test fabric. Each back and forth motion of the mechanical arm is called a double rub. This mimics the action of sitting down and getting up, the two actions where fabrics are likely to rub against each other. The double rubs are done in sets of 5,000 until the test fabric shows signs of wear or 2 yarns break. A notable change in color and pile are also noted. Typically, 3,000 double rubs are estimated to be one year’s use.
