The first step is figuring out the total dimensions of the project by width and length.
Determine the dimensions in inches. Let's say your project is going to be 36 inches. That equals three feet or one yard. So this project only needs one yard of fabric. For better visualizing, it's helpful to get out some graph paper and sketch out your design. Don't forget to include any seam allowances (for pillows), hemming (for tailored pants ), edging (for canvas wall-art ) or additional fabric you might need for gathering, crimping, and smocking.
The yorkshire fabric shop is based in, you guessed it, yorkshire, in a place called batley. They have tonnes of fabrics available no matter what your next project or price range, from upholstering chairs to making curtains. The fabric i chose for my project was this hour glass pattern.
Here’s what i used for this project: (affiliate links below to the products i used and recommend) fabric (anything thick and sturdy, i used outdoor fabric because it’s smoother than upholstery fabric, but either will work) office chair eye protection spray glue (optional) by the way, ryobi generously sent me their airstrike stapler when i told them i had a desk chair i wanted to reupholster. They thought it would make the whole project go much faster, and they were totally right!.

To save money in the beginning, you may want to start with beginners kit of upholstery tools, or you may want to order the specialist tools as you need them for specific projects. That allows you to build up supplies over time. In addition, you may want some of the following generic tools:.

This is probably the most intimidating part when you upholster a bench or another piece of furniture. Sometimes you’re just not sure where to start! for this bench makeover, the starting point was removing the decorative trim that was hot glued over the staples to hide them. Next, i used my arrow fastener staple lifter and pliers to pull the staples out of the mdf boards that were glued together to make up the upholstered bench arms.

First take off the cushion. It may be screwed in to the bottom. Take note of the way the corners are folded so you can recreate these pleats later.
Turn the cushion over and detach the dust cover. Remove all the staples or tacks that are attaching the dust cover and upholstery fabric, i’m using a c. S. Osborne combination tool to do this.
On august 8, 2012 • by kristi • 19 i’m back today with a step-by-step tutorial to show you how to upholster a dining chair with welt cord / piping trim and buttons. Of course, the buttons are optional. 🙂 as i mentioned yesterday, very often i see diyers take on a reupholstery project, and leave off the welt cord. More times than not, i see this being done on dining chairs, where people take off the original chair cover with the welt cord, and replace it with a very simple wrap-and-staple chair cover. That always makes me a little sad to see, because i think that the welt cord / piping makes such a difference in the finished look of the chair. (don’t get me wrong…a wrap-and-staple can be nice, too, and it’s definitely the most appropriate choice on some dining chairs. ).

I purchased two leather arm chairs when in england from the firm that has the contract to keep the houses of parliament in proper leather seating. One chair is in my living room, the other in the library where i have used it comfortably for several decades of reading. It was very well worn: both arms had tears. I searched for an upholsterer and found a3d upholstery. After first email contact, i submitted photos and received back a report from an obviously well schooled technician/artisan. Mr. Georges abi rached arrived the next day and picked up the chair with an expected two and a half week turnaround. The work of complete leather replacement was performed with artistry and technical finesse. The chair has an intricate design and requires work that only a superior workman could complete. The chair matches its twin perfectly and i could not have been more gratified. I recommend a3d with honor.

Use a trimmer’s staple gun when tacking the new material onto the frame. This is especially helpful when you have to deal with cramped spaces and will ensure that the material will stay tight for as long as possible. If you feel that it’s not yet time to replace your car upholstery altogether, you may want to engage in preventive maintenance to lengthen the fabric’s lifetime. Vacuuming the interior every now and then helps get rid of allergens, dust, soil, food particles, and dirt that may have accumulated. Immediately removing spills and stains will also keep the fabric looking new for much longer.

Put on new polypropylene webbing in a basket-weave pattern by doing the following: start in the middle, fold over the end and staple in place (image 1). Use a bar clamp to hold the webbing down. Gently rock the webbing stretcher (image 2) until the webbing is tight. Staple the end into place. Cut the webbing, leaving an extra inch to fold over and staple down.
