trace the outline of the seat onto 1-in. -thick foam. Cut the foam with a bread knife. To avoid tearing the foam, pull the knife toward you, using light pressure and short strokes. Our seats, for example, were made from a pegboard-like material secured to a 1x3 framework, covered with horsehair padding. Someone had already reupholstered the chairs, going directly over the old fabric. Expect the unexpected and adjust your game plan accordingly. If you're re-covering more than one chair, number each chair and seat; that way, the screw holes will line up properly when you reinstall the seats. There are special tools just for yanking upholstery staples or tacks, but you can get by with basic hand tools (photo 1). Tip: old, dull side cutters are perfect.
They grip staples well but don't cut them off.

leather is one of the classiest and sleekest materials with which to make furniture.
It’s beautiful and usually comfortable, but it is one of the hardest to clean since water can ruin it. There are methods available for you to refresh the look of your leather furniture, however.
By donna boyle schwartz photo: shutterstock. Com with its rich color and supple feel, leather furniture invites an element of luxury into your room decor. Fortunately, despite its opulence, leather doesn’t require the kind of painstaking maintenance you might associate with other refinements. Inevitably, however, there comes a time in the life of all leather chairs, chaises, or sofas when a little care is called for. Rest assured that it’s not difficult to learn how to clean leather furniture, and the process involves only supplies that most homeowners keep readily at hand.
Happy spring remodelaholic readers. Jaime from that’s my letter here today to share a reupholstery project. How to recover a tub chair and completely change the look. My friend recently was looking to get rid of two ikea tullsta tub chairs. They were older, dated and covered in brown leather that just didn’t suit my style. Time for a furniture makeover.
Please don’t feel that you can’t have the same success without a steamvac (i. E. Upholstery/carpet wet vacuum). The only issue you risk is leaving blotchy water marks or a more prominent vinegar-y smell, but this can be avoided (see below). You could use alcohol, as it will evaporate and not leave a watermark.
(test a small area first to be sure it doesn’t interfere with the coloring of the upholstery. ) after use and when the american upholsterer great gift coffee mug american upholsterer great gift american upholsterer dries, you may need to gently rub out the stiffness in the fabric left behind by the alcohol.
A basic chair makeover : this project will walk you through the basics of making over a classic dining chair- or any chair where all you’re doing is removing the seat and changing out the fabric and/or padding. This is a great place to start if upholstery is totally new to you. You can easily finish it in an afternoon (or an hour if you’re fast!) and have a totally new look.
I’m using mid-density 25mm (1″) foam. 6 wadding/batting to soften the curve of the foam and help conceal any inconsistencies. 7 fabric i usually go all practical when it comes to upholstery fabrics, especially where kids are involved, though in this case i kinda forgot about that. I wanted to use a cable knit jumper – a cream one at that – so i just did. Of course i’ve treated it with a fabric protector and have tried to persuade charlotte to be somewhat careful though let’s face it, she’s a kid and it’s her chair so she can use it as she likes (within reason of course). I figure if it does get particularly dirty, worn or stained i always know how to recover it – that’s the power of learning to do stuff yourself i guess :-) i picked up my pre-loved cable knit jumper for just $3. 99 from savers.
Measure the chair seat before stitching the needlepoint. Add 1 inch for turning under the seat. Allow 2" of bare canvas on all sides of the stitched motif. Stitch the needlepoint to the size of the chair's upholstery plus one extra inch of area. Block the needlepoint. Remove the seat from the chair. If the upholstery fabric is bulky, remove it. If not, you can leave it.
I have been teasing you all for quite some time now about this french chair project. It was a thrift store find, and i was excited to try my hand at upholstery again after working on a french settee last summer. The chair’s structure was sound, but the wood was scratched and faded and the fabric was well, terrible. Now here it is after a paint and re-paint, and with new, modern fabric.
Thread masking tape don’t forget to check out upholstery basics: tool time to learn more about the tools we’re using today. Instructions 1. If you plan on washing your cover in the future, pre-shrink the fabric by washing and drying before beginning construction. Laying out the fabric: i’m making a 25″ square cushion with a 4″ boxing around the edge. When marking my pieces on the fabric, i’ll need to add an extra 1/2″ to all sewn edges; this is called a seam allowance. If my final cushion needs to be 25″ square, i’ll add an extra 1/2″ to all sides, making my cut piece a 26″ square. The 4″ finished boxing will go around the front and sides of the cushion (75″), so it will be 5″ x 76″ with seam allowance. We’ll also need a zipper boxing in the back so we can easily insert and remove the padding from the case. I like my boxing to go around the sides about 5″, so the finished dimensions of the zipper boxing need to be 4″ x 35″. The zipper attaches in the center of the zipper boxing between two strips of fabric, so each strip is a finished dimension of 2″ x 35″. With seam allowances, we’ll need two strips that are 3″ x 36″ to make up the zipper boxing.
I get many emails each week asking for advice on upholstering that first piece of furniture. If you start small and gradually build up to more difficult pieces you will probably have less frustration and save money. Making the wrong cuts in your fabric, putting fabric on in the wrong order or choosing the wrong materials is costly. I can’t stress this enough, as you tear down an old upholstered piece, take lots of pictures. Even after the 17 years that we have been doing this we still use a camera every day.
Shop now easy-to-store and easy-to-tote from room to room, bissell's little green can remove just one stain or clean an entire sofa. Simply fill the clean tank with water and one of bissell's cleaning formulas. Then, dispense the solution through the nozzle, gently scrub with the soft brush, and vacuum it all back into the dirty water tank for easy emptying. In our tests, this gh seal star made quick work or removing stains without damaging fabrics or carpet and ii picks up spills faster and more thoroughly than you can with a cloth. The bissell little green also carries our green good housekeeping seal.
Thrift store outdoor chairs spray paint – i scoured my basement, and found some rustoleum spray paint in aged copper. It was only enough for one chair, so i had to buy another can for the second chair, but that’s still better than buying two new cans, right? fabric – i had fabric leftover from the diy outdoor sofa project, which i used so the furniture would match. It’s neutral colored duck canvas, for anyone wondering.
Firstly, you will need to remove the old leather or fabric from your sofa. If you have a slipcover then this part is easy. However if your sofa is upholstered, you will need to remove the old leather by flipping your sofa and carefully removing the staples. A flat head screwdriver is the easiest and most sturdy way to remove the staples. Once all the staples are out, the leather or fabric should be easy to remove. If some parts are sewn together i recommend using a seam ripper to carefully separate the fabric from the chair.
Enough upholstery fabric – measure your chair, the cushion and add about one or two more yards batting for back and back sides – i used batting that you’d normally use for quilting. You can use cotton batting – you just want something that will give you the cushion you wish. I also doubled the batting for added heft.
Very strong, yet easy to use. Threads a regular needle on a $59 brother sewing machine easily. Sewed replacement seats & backs (sling type) on (6) 12 yr old swivel rocking patio chairs using phifertex jacquards fabric (highly recommended). 2 spools of this thread, 7 yds of fabric, & 6 cans of rustoleum hammered spray paint later patio dining set is like new. Similiar sets are $1900 & up. I love working with this thread. Never jammed up, no broken needles, held consistent proper tension the whole time. Also did a small hand sewing project with it. So easy to use because it has just enough stiffness to it that it tends not to tangle, yet is very manageable. Will use it for many projects like beach bags, outdoor cushions, etc.
Fabric should complement your furniture's style & character. Pattern scale should be appropriate to the room size. If furniture is in an active space, like a family room, select colors or patterns that disguise spills & stains. The more tightly woven the fabric, the better it will wear. If furniture is exposed to direct sunlight, choose outdoor or sunlight-resistant fabrics to reduce fading or close draperies during the brightest hours of the day.
Faux leather is one of several names given to artificial or synthetic leather. These names are often used to describe specific end uses of synthetic leather products such as faux leather (sofa, chair and headboard upholstery), leatherette (auto upholstery, clothing), and koskin (consumer goods). There are two primary types of faux leather construction: polyurethane (“puâ€), and polyvinyl chloride (pvc – “vinylâ€).
How to wash upholstery? specifically microfiber? i’ve been wanting to share this for a few months now but, because of christmas i haven’t gotten around to editing the photos and videos until now. I know it’s not an easy task to wash upholstery. I say wash because these article is exactly about that. I’ll be sharing how i deep cleaned my couches and was able to get out even the toughest stains with oxi clean.
I used to own a white couch and even though i hadn’t yet learned how to clean , i loved it. That thing really did get quite dirty but i was always able to get it clean again, not because i had some top secret cleaning recipe, but because it had removable slip covers! such a lifesaver! if you love the look of a white sofa, you should know that even when they’re pretty grubby in real life, they still look almost perfect in photos. So they’re blogger-friendly. As long as you do a lot of laundry and rarely let people see it in real life. 🙂.
Your furniture is a major investment and a major part of your home. That’s why you need to take care of it. Spills, pets, kids, and simple aging can all take their toll on your furniture and leave it looking well past its prime. There are plenty of options out there, like deep professional cleanings, re upholstery, or just flat-out replacing them, but for many a custom slip cover is the perfect solution.
if you have the tools you need already, the fabric, thread, and decorative trim only cost about $25. If you need the tools, it’ll cost more, but the staple gun, pins, and upholstery needles can be used on other projects as well. The staple lifter is optional. I think it’s useful to have, but you could use pliers or an office staple remover instead.
