We all recognize the protestors among us: neighbors who circulate petitions for clean-air bills, animal-rights groups in the subway harassing elderly women in fur coats, students calling for peace. We often share their convictions, but voice them in a whisper. So what distinguishes the demonstrators from the do-nothings? the fact is, activists choose to take up causes for a wide variety of reasons—some not as straightforward as they might seem.

Be the change you want to see in the world. We hear this refrain on a daily basis, and we personalize it. By robert brodo | nov 21, 2019 7:50:49 am | in the world of leadership development, it is quite rare to come across a new and fresh topic that has mass applicability. By sheer virtue of the number of books, magazines, and other outlets there is obviously enough “new” things to go around every day, week, and month, but in all reality too much of it is the same old thing repackaged. That’s why i was so excited to learn something new from a participant of one of my leadership development programs when he shared his insights on a topic he calls becoming an “activist leader. ”.

“activist” has become a frequent title these days. With the continual push for minority rights amongst polarizing politics, anybody with a social media account wants to say they’re an activist. Just last week, a friend told me how she included “women’s rights activist” on her resume, but i know that, besides a few tweets, she hasn’t actually done anything for the cause. I didn’t want to discourage her, but i also had trouble lumping her into the same category as fearless women like ruth bader ginsburg, gloria steinem or angela davis. These are women who risked their lives in the fight for equality, and they made real social changes beyond 140-character tweets.

This sounds like a good thing for shareholders, but it isn't always. Here are some potential pros and cons to individual investors of having an activist investor involved.

Activist education is conducted by and with activists, is openly interested in the processes of change-making, and utilises education methods that effect justice-oriented social change. We use the expression ‘activist education’ to describe our work. This has implications not just for what we consider important for community organisers to learn, but how we believe adults learn most effectively. We’ve facilitated discussions and workshops with other social movement trainers and facilitators to explore just what might be involved in working as activist educators. The educational principles and practices (or pedagogy) that guide our work include:.

By s12ldst304 meyer’s chapter three focuses mainly on who and why individuals become active in social movements. The basis of his argument lies in the fact that “movements are always comprised of a wide range of people-people who have an equally wide range of reasons for engaging in social action” (45). It is important to recognize how the perception of those who become involved in social movements has changed over time from a collective behavior theory where participants are recognized as crazy and irrational to a more accepted notion of those who have deep rooted interest in social justice and a cause for their commitment. However, it is interesting how the development of the occupy movement has made the collective behavior theory re-emerge. While some think that the people participating in occupy wall street are a bunch of crazy hippies and poor people, the demographics show that protestors actually cover a wide array of people who are truly commited to left-wing politics-opposition to corporate capitalism. Instead they strive for radical redistribution of wealth, intense regulation of the private sector, and policies that would protect american jobs from moving overseas. These facts and statistics proves one of meyer’s other points that “activists in social movements are disproportionally advantages in terms of education, resources, familial support, and social connections” (47). This idea resonates really closely with what we’ve learned about ella baker in the sense that she also came of a black family that was considered to be privileged during the civil rights movement. Meyers also discussed that individuals may dedicate their lives’ careers to social movements, often movement professionals, who are often ignored. Likewise, history of social movements and it’s participants,  especially that of the civil right movement, has been distorted. For example, many people think that rosa parks was a random woman who challenged the bus system, when in reality she was one of the main women behind the scenes and actually worked for organizations like t he naacp. An important question to ask here is: why do those who already have advantages in society feel the need to take it upon themselves and struggle for those who do not? are there really enough or even any benefits in it for them?.

Activists are simply practicing ‘participatory democracy’ i was talking recently with resurgence & ecologist managing editor, susan clark about how much i enjoy the book reviews section in resurgence & ecologist magazine. I was saying, in particular, how in a world where information is so readily reduced to 140 twitter characters, the newly jointly-titled magazine’s substantial review section neatly summarises a whole array of the most important current and classic publications on ‘soil, soul and society’ in every issue – which means those of us who sadly don’t have time to read the entire books themselves don’t have to but can still stay informed.

Activism is not something you say, or something you do, no single act can encompass it or qualify one as an activist. Activism is a mindset. Protesting does not make you an activist any more than looking at the stars makes you an astronaut. It is an understanding of a broken or flawed system, and the desire to fix it. So how does one become an activist? here is a helpful guide to get you started on developing your own, unique activist mentality.

Coined by historian arthur schlesinger, jr. In 1947, the term judicial activism carries multiple definitions. Some argue that a judge is a judicial activist when they simply overturn a prior decision. Others counter that the primary function of the court is to re-interpret elements of the constitution and assess the constitutionality of laws and that such actions should, therefore, not be called judicial activism at all because they are expected.

/ theveganactivist / leave a comment more than 150 billion animals are killed each year by humans. To put that number into perspective, consider this: 1 billion seconds is just over 31 years, and 150 billion seconds is 4753. 5 years. It’s a massive number- and these animals do not want to die. They all share the same simple desire to be free from pain and to carry out their natural behaviours, protected from human interference. It is estimated that 3000 animals will die every second in slaughterhouses around the world. Competition to produce inexpensive meat, dairy and eggs had led to animal agribusiness treating animals as objects and commodities. Most people like to think that their animal products are coming from the small, homely farms that are showed throughout meat-industry advertising. In reality, these farms have been replaced with violent factory farms and almost all meat will come from large warehouses where animals are confined in crowded cages or restrictive pens. The only way this industry can survive is through secrecy: the less the consumer knows the better.

The difference between many, if not most activists and pacifists, is an activist would kill in order to look like something other than weak, or passive. The activist wouldn't suffer the humiliation and shame of being called a pacifist by others, he/she couldn't handle it, so he/she became an activist who appeared to be active and ready at all times instead, and tried to be the persecutor, rather than the persecuted.

By paola salwan daher * i believe becoming a feminist activist creeps up on you. You don’t wake up one day thinking: « mmm, right, after coffee i’ll just go and advocate for women’s rights, now shall i? ». At least this isn’t how it happened for me. Becoming an activist was the result of an internal process fuelled by observations: a condescending attitude from a man , a patronising comment , an inner sense of difference because i am a woman, and because i am an arab woman who lived in a small french town rife with prejudices and misconceptions about arab women. In general, all of this conspired to render me attentive to stories of oppression from a young age.

Some of these activists have been engaged in this type of activity for decades (e. G. , carl icahn, nelson peltz). In the 1980s, these activists frequently sought the breakup of the company—hence their frequent characterization as “corporate raiders. ” these activists generally used their own money to obtain a large block of the company’s shares and engage in a proxy contest for control of the board.

Social activism is an intentional action with the goal of bringing about social change. If you feel strongly about a cause and are working towards a change, you could be considered an activist. An activist is anyone who is fighting for change in society. An activist can be a student attending a rally against tuition increase, a politician fighting against international human rights abuses or a mother of a child killed by a drunk driver talking to students about drinking and driving. Social activists consider the larger picture – how can they find ways to end injustice and to create strong communities which encourage economic, social and psychological health.

Being an activist doesn’t always have to mean protesting in the streets, fighting for passage of a law, or raising funds for an organization. It simply means, well, being active for a cause—but the particular action you take and the cause for which you fight are up to you. Your voice really can make a difference in raising awareness of an issue and even changing laws and policies. Use this guide to start championing causes you care about on the local, state, or federal level—whether you can invest a little time or a lot. "the wheels of government turn slowly, but they don’t turn at all if you’re not involved. Working together with like-minded individuals to move the process—however incrementally—can be gratifying," said christopher kush, author of "the one-hour activist: the 15 most powerful actions you can take to fight for the issues and candidates you care about" (jossey-bass, 2004).

Recent acts of nonviolent civil disobedience have gained a significant amount of national attention. On june 27, bree newsome scaled a flagpole in front of the south carolina state house to take down the confederate flag that was on display. On july 18, black lives matter protesters interrupted presidential candidates bernie sanders and martin o’malley during a speaking event in phoenix, arizona. Another incident began on july 29 when activists rappelled off the st. Johns bridge in oregon for forty hours to block a ship as it embarked for the alaskan arctic to begin drilling for oil and natural gas. Critics claim these actions, along with marches and rallies, are a complete waste of time.

Taking on an activist mindset shifts many aspects. Team members take on a new responsibility along with the culture required to support this new level of activity and results. Leaders will make or break this shift. Activist leaders need to set more than tone. Activist leaders need to build the stage for as many as possible to perform to their fullest potential.

What does the term “activism” mean to you?

Over the last three years the u. S. Market has witnessed a substantial rise of activist investors. According to schulte, roth & zabel’s activist investing 2015 annual review, a total of 344 companies worldwide were subjected to activist demands in 2014, up 18% from the 291 recorded in 2013. And the movement is gaining acceptance as a mainstream investment strategy. No longer is the term “activist” associated with the corporate raiders of the 1980’s. Instead, activism is now more often thought of as a value-based strategy that optimizes untapped shareholder wealth. This is showcased by a recent announcement from state street global advisors, one of the largest index investors in the world, saying that they are completely willing to partner with activists. Neuberger berman also announced earlier in the year they took a 20% stake in jana partners.

In addition to the financial metrics used by typical graham and dodd value investors, activists will look closely at other metrics to determine the viability of a company for activism. These include: insider buying/selling (buying and selling activity by managements and boards of directors is often considered a reliable indicator of a company’s outlook);.

Nelson peltz was an activist investor long before the term shareholder activism was popular. And while his corporate targets have grown in size, his focus has remained the same: cut costs and boost sales. Since co-founding trian fund management in 2005, he has faced only two proxy contests to gain board representation. The first was in 2006, when heinz opposed his proposed slate of five new directors. The second was in 2015, when dupont (nyse: dd) opposed his proposed slate of four new directors.

Activism is very important. Persistent and vocal advocacy for a cause directly influences the amount of money flowing into that cause: think of the fight to cure aids, cancer research, alzheimer's research and now healthy life extension. Productively framing, placing and keeping a problem front and center in the mainstream of our culture is hard work, but that education and persuasion unlocks purses far and wide. Government money is usually the least of these resources. Far more funding comes from venture, charitable and corporate concerns. Corporations and venture capitalists see mainstream culture explicitly in terms of needs and markets for future products. If a need is shouted loudly enough, money will be directed to answer that need. Charitable causes answer the same needs - and more certainly goes to those needs shouted loudly from the rooftops - but through voluntary donations and giving.

A social justice activist knows what being involved in activism entails. It's about community. It's not a one-man crusade show. If you consider yourself an activist, recognize that defining yourself by that isn't the action. The action is being there and doing the work with and for others. There’s a difference between being an activist, advocate and ally, but these terms are often used interchangeably. There doesn’t seem to be a clear distinction because they are similar terms relating to activism. I question what the differences are and if the differences are even that substantial.

So are you an activist?

For more than 30 years, i’ve been a full-time environmental activist. I’ve been arrested more than a dozen times—three of them on purpose—written dozens of books about the natural world, served on activist boards of half a dozen conservation organizations, spent what feels like a tenth of my life in public meetings. I’ve been threatened and even shot at. I have fought against global warming, the gutting of the endangered species act , the mining act , dams, road building—there’s never an end to the fights. For as long as one cares about beauty, there will never be an end to them. And where i live, in the nearly pristine yaak valley of northwestern montana, the overriding issue is always forestry practices.
